Guimarães’ £75m Arsenal switch ends Newcastle’s midfield dream
Bruno Guimarães has completed a £75 million transfer to Arsenal, leaving Newcastle United just 34 months into the five-year contract extension he signed in October 2023. The Brazil international’s departure from St James’ Park follows personal terms agreed with the Gunners by early July, with super-agent Kia Joorabchian steering the deal.
The move was confirmed after Guimarães requested a delay to his pre-season travel plans as the switch to north London gathered pace. His agreement with Arsenal came after months of negotiation, and the £75 million fee reflects the club’s ambition to secure a top-class midfielder.
Arsenal pursued Guimarães for his proven Premier League output – 30 goals and 25 assists in 153 appearances – and his desire to leave Newcastle. Shaun Custis highlighted the player’s “difference of ideas” with the club as a key factor, noting that the midfielder’s ambition matched the timing of his contract extension.
Custis drew a direct parallel with Alexander Isak, who left Newcastle for Liverpool in a £125 million deal last summer. He argued that Guimarães’ move mirrors Isak’s in ambition and timing, suggesting the former captain misled supporters about his commitment to the club’s culture.
Guimarães’ emotional statement on joining Arsenal contrasted sharply with his public displays at St James’ Park, where he once claimed to be “half-Geordie, half-Brazilian”. Custis dismissed the sentiment as insincere, pointing to a Newcastle-style tattoo commemorating the 2025 Carabao Cup triumph.
The Brazil international’s exit also came after Eddie Howe’s departure by mutual consent, with Custis insisting Guimarães had been preparing to leave before the season’s end. He noted that the midfielder’s smoother exit differed from Isak’s, who was blocked until Newcastle secured a British transfer-record fee.
Arsenal’s signing ranks among the most high-profile of the summer window and bolsters their title prospects, while Newcastle lose a player who contributed significantly on the pitch and in the dressing room. The transfer underscores the Gunners’ intent to strengthen, and marks a notable shift in Newcastle’s midfield resources.
