Guardiola backs Manchester City amid Premier League legal storm

Amid the biggest sanctioning investigation in English football history, Pep Guardiola, together with president Khaldoon Al Mubarak, has broken the silence and sent a message of support to Manchester City, denouncing the legal storm that the Premier League has unleashed against the club.

Guardiola's message

Guardiola, accompanied by president Khaldoon Al Mubarak, used his social media to break the silence and affirm his commitment to the club. “I want every Manchester City fan to know that I am here; more than ever,” the manager said. He added: “I have always been, I am, and I will always be, behind my club, my owner, my president, Ferran, the players, the staff, Enzo and you, our only supporters. Let me be clear: we will get through this together.”

According to Europa Press, these words respond to the “colossal legal and institutional storm” that is hitting the Etihad Stadium. Manchester City is at the epicenter of the biggest sanctioning process in English football history. The Premier League has filed 115 charges for alleged breaches of Financial Fair Play.

Charges and possible sanctions

The accusations span almost a decade of management, pointing to a lack of transparency in the accounts and alleged inflation of sponsorship revenue linked to the owners. Among the anticipated sanctions are multi‑million‑pound fines and massive point deductions. In the worst‑case scenario, the regulations allow for administrative relegation, permanent expulsion from the Premier League, or the retrospective stripping of titles won.

An independent commission states that the club inflated its revenue and artificially reduced its costs by almost €1 050 million (more than £900 million) between the 2009/10 and 2017/18 seasons. The described methods include fictitious contracts with commercial partners secretly funded by the ownership and circular transactions to conceal the actual wage bill.

During the nine years under investigation, City invested €1 443.93 million in 64 signings, including Sergio ‘Kun’ Agüero, David Silva and Kevin De Bruyne. Subtracting the €381 million generated from sales in the same period, the resulting figure approaches the €1 050 million created through the irregularities. That investment enabled the club to lift seven major domestic titles in that span.

The contrast between Guardiola’s firm backing and the seriousness of the accusations highlights the tension surrounding Manchester City. While the manager stands as the club’s shield, the Premier League is preparing possible measures that could redefine its future. The response of the team and its supporters will be decisive in overcoming the crisis.
