Groningen secure experienced Dutch defender to steady shaky start

Hans Hateboer, 32, has re‑joined FC Groningen on a contract until the end of the current season after leaving Rennes in the summer, bringing a former Dutch international’s experience back to his boyhood club.

Hateboer transferred to Serie A side Atalanta in the winter window of 2016/2017. He later signed for Rennes in 2024, spent the 2023/2024 season on loan at Lyon, and left the French club in the summer.

Why Groningen pursued Hateboer

Hateboer progressed through the FC Groningen academy and made his senior debut in the 2013/2014 season. He went on to record 111 appearances for the club and lifted the KNVB Cup in 2014/2015.

In the winter window of 2016/2017 he moved to Atalanta, where he became a first‑team regular. During his Atalanta spell he amassed 245 games, earned 13 caps for the Dutch national team and featured in the side that won the 2023/2024 Europa League.

Hateboer signed for Rennes in 2024 but struggled to replicate his Atalanta form, featuring in just 29 matches.

What the return means for both clubs

FC Groningen have enjoyed an even start to the campaign, recording two wins, two draws and two defeats. The 32‑year‑old’s experience is expected to bolster a side seeking consistency for the remainder of the season.

Rennes lose a defender who failed to cement a regular place after a brief spell. His exit closes a short chapter at the French club following limited game time.
