Greek defence blocks Germany in the Nations League

In the Nations League, the Germans were held to a stalemate on Greek soil, the match ending in a goalless draw (0-0). The Greek defence, led by goalkeeper Kostas Tzolakis, neutralised the attempts of the Mannschaft throughout the game.

Lively first half

The Greeks were dangerous from the kickoff, Jonas Urbig had to get involved as early as the 2nd minute to clear a header onto the far post from Fotis Ioannidis. Germany quickly regained possession, looking to test the opposing goalkeeper.

In the 23rd minute, Derry Scherant crossed towards the Greek goal, followed by a powerful strike from Tom Bischof in the 25th minute, both saved by Kostas Tzolakis. The Germans kept pushing, but the Greek defence remained solid.

In the 32nd minute, Jonathan Burkardt found the net after Scherant's work on the left wing, but the referee immediately disallowed the goal for off‑side. Frustration grew on the side of the Mannschaft.

In the first half, Germany dominated possession with 73 % and recorded thirteen shots, three of which were on target. Despite those numbers, no goal followed, Kostas Tzolakis's solidity remaining decisive.

The second half saw Greece create the best chances on the counter‑attack, while the Germans, despite territorial dominance, failed to convert. The score remained nil until the final whistle.

Implications for the standings

The result keeps Greece at the top of the group with eight points, level with the Netherlands. Germany, now on five points, falls three points behind the leading duo.

Jürgen Klopp, under pressure, saw his smile disappear, while Ivan Jovanović sees his side regain confidence after two wins in three games. The Mannschaft will need to bounce back to stay in contention for the quarter‑finals.
