Gravenberch as key in Liverpool's injury wave
Coach Andoni Iraola expects that Ryan Gravenberch will play an important role for Liverpool in the coming period, now that the club is dealing with a wave of injuries. The English top club has to play a match every three to four days, while players such as Jeremie Frimpong, Conor Bradley and Dominik Szoboszlai are unavailable. Iraola emphasizes that rotation is crucial to prevent fatigue.
Versatility of Gravenberch
The Dutch midfielder can operate in multiple positions, which Iraola sees as a great advantage. “If you ask me what his best position is, I say: as a number 8. But he can also play perfectly as a number 6,” explains the coach. Additionally, he can operate as a right back, number 10 or even centrally behind, providing a valuable solution.
Injuries force rotation
With the loss of Frimpong and Bradley, Liverpool must find creative solutions. Iraola explains: “It’s about how the players feel. We rotate because we have to play every three to four days.” The absence of Szoboszlai, who has not yet trained with the group, underscores the need to deploy fresh players.
Challenge against Brighton
The upcoming match against Brighton & Hove Albion promises to be difficult; the Seagulls sit in third place in the Premier League after seven games. Iraola praised their performances: “They are doing incredibly well and deserve all the praise they receive.” He believes Liverpool must appear at its very best to influence the match.
Besides Brighton, Liverpool has a busy schedule with matches against Fenerbahçe, Crystal Palace, Manchester United, Club Brugge and Sunderland, among others. These successive fixtures increase the pressure on the squad and make the deployment of a versatile player like Gravenberch even more important.
Iraola indicated that he feels his team is in good shape despite the injury problems. “We will have to be at our very best, but I feel my team is in good shape,” said the coach during the press conference.
According to Iraola, Gravenberch can provide a crucial solution in the positions where help is currently needed. “At the moment we need help in other positions, and he can provide that,” he says. The versatility of the Oranje‑international thus becomes a key to overcoming the current crisis.
The contrast between the wave of injuries and the availability of a player who can perform in five different roles shows how Liverpool is trying to maintain itself during a period of intensive match congestion.
