Granit Xhaka withdraws from Nations League after fake Covid certificate
On Monday morning, the 33‑year‑old midfielder Granit Xhaka posted an apology on Instagram, in which he admits that years ago he bought a fake coronavirus vaccination certificate; as captain of Premier‑League‑club Sunderland he now faces a possible prison sentence. The Swiss Football Association has now confirmed that he will not make himself available for the first four Nations‑League‑matches.
Fake coronavirus certificate and Instagram‑speech
According to the Swiss newspaper Blick, Xhaka contracted COVID‑19 in 2021 and early 2022, but had a medical certificate issued without being vaccinated. He bought the fake certificate from his own doctor. The revelation came after months of rumours.
On Instagram Xhaka wrote: “In recent days there has been a lot of reporting about an issue from my past.” He added that he felt “personally very insecure” about the Covid‑vaccination and had serious reservations.
“I harboured a deep distrust of the vaccine and was characterised by fear and uncertainty. In this emotional state I purchased a vaccination certificate, instead of clarifying my outstanding questions through the proper channels.”
“Today I clearly see that this was not the right path. It was a mistake. I am sorry. I take responsibility for this decision, face the facts and will fully cooperate with the competent authorities.”
Criminal investigation and sporting consequences
Last Saturday the Lucerne police confirmed to the German news agency DPA that a criminal investigation is underway into both the player and the doctor. The investigation focuses on forgery.
The Lucerne public prosecutor’s office has indicated that a conviction could result in a prison sentence of up to five years. Xhaka has stated that he is fully cooperating with the competent authorities.
The Swiss Football Association confirmed that Xhaka will not make himself available for the first four fixtures in the Nations League B‑division: against North‑Macedonia on 26 September, Scotland on 29 September, and Slovenia on 3 October. As a result he will miss the crucial opening phase of the competition.
