Gordon says Barcelona proved English critics wrong after strong start

In the warm glow of the Camp Nou, Anthony Gordon faced Rayo Vallecano and used the moment to reflect on his journey from England to Spain, saying the Spanish game finally recognises his quality.

Transfer saga and early criticism

The English forward arrived at Barcelona after the Catalan club paid €80 million to Newcastle United. The fee sparked widespread criticism, with many questioning the cost and the player’s ability to replace the likes of Lewandowski, Ferrán Torres and Marcus Rashford.

Statistical impact in LaLiga

Despite the scepticism, Gordon has featured in six of Barcelona’s seven league matches, starting five times. In those appearances he has supplied five assists, leading the competition in that category, although he has yet to open his goal‑scoring account for the club.

His contributions have helped Barcelona secure victories, and the left‑wing position he now occupies has become a regular feature since Raphinha shifted to a more central role.

Gordon’s response to his critics

During the September FIFA window, the forward told ITV that his style of play is now more respected in Spain than it ever was in England. "I think I have become a different player in the eyes of many people. In England I was respected for my speed and pressure, but they never respected the quality and intelligence with which I play," he said, speaking while concentrating on the England national team.

He added that the move to Barcelona was a vote of confidence in his abilities: "In England nobody really respected me; they only saw a fast, aggressive player. In Spain they appreciate my intelligence and technique, because at Barça if you lack skill you do not belong."

The interview, supplied by AFP and listed as a preferred source on Google, underscores the stark contrast Gordon perceives between the Premier League and LaLiga. It also highlights his determination to silence former detractors by delivering tangible results on the pitch.

Javier Aguirre, former coach, recalled Gordon’s arrival and expressed a desire to reunite with the English striker, further illustrating the growing admiration for his performances.
