Goalkeeper doubts threaten Chelsea’s Premier League title chase

Chelsea’s pre‑season ended with a decisive 3‑1 victory over Real Sociedad, but the win was shadowed by a warning that keeping Robert Sanchez as first‑choice goalkeeper could derail their Premier League title ambitions. The Spaniard manager Xabi Alonso praised the performance but stressed the defensive frailties highlighted by the goalkeeper’s errors.

Goalkeeper doubts after pre‑season win

Chelsea have been warned they will not be Premier League title contenders this season if they persist with Robert Sanchez as their first‑choice goalkeeper. The warning came after Xabi Alonso’s side secured the 3‑1 win over Real Sociedad at Stamford Bridge.

Alonso, the Spaniard, took the reins in west London after a dismal tenth‑place finish last season, and he is eager to improve the Blues’ fortunes.

Spending spree and title ambitions

The summer has seen heavy turnover, highlighted by Morgan Rogers arriving from Aston Villa for a record £117million fee, alongside Maxence Lacroix, Marco Palestra, Valentin Barco and Pep Chavarria.

Further experience was added with Jordan Henderson from Brentford and Danny Welbeck from Brighton, while the defensive line was bolstered by Lacroix and younger full‑backs.

Former Scotland striker Alan Smith said of Sanchez: “He’s needed upgrading for a while, and it’s been a bit of a glaring shortfall in their lineup. They’ve spent a lot of money, haven’t they, Chelsea? Whether they’ve got any room to spend some more on a keeper, I don’t know, but Sanchez at the moment seems to be the number one.” Smith noted Sanchez’s £25m move from Brighton in 2023 and his high‑profile errors over three seasons at Stamford Bridge.

Smith predicts the title race will be a two‑horse contest between defending champions Arsenal and Manchester City, adding that “Man City are the key challenger.” Alonso’s own top‑six prediction placed Arsenal first, City second, Manchester United third, Liverpool fourth, Chelsea fifth and Aston Villa sixth.

Chelsea open the season with a west London derby at Craven Cottage, travelling to face Fulham.
