Girona leads race for free‑transfer centre‑back as Rayo say goodbye to Abdul Mumin
Ghana defender Abdul Mumin, 28, has written an emotional farewell to Rayo Vallecano after four years, announcing his free‑transfer departure as he prepares to join Girona. The note arrived while he walked out for the pitch inspection before the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group L match between England and Ghana at Boston Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts on June 23, 2026.
Mumin joined Rayo Vallecano from Vitoria Guimares in 2022 and quickly became a fan favourite. His physical style, defensive reliability and commitment made him a key figure in the club’s La Liga campaigns.
"From the very first day, I felt at home. I never felt out of place," he wrote. "I only wish I could have been more." The centre‑back also thanked the workers, kit managers, cooks and cleaners, calling them the soul of Rayo.
Rayo face defensive void
The defender's departure is a significant loss for Rayo Vallecano, which will now need to find a replacement for one of its most reliable defenders.
Mumin is currently in talks with Girona on a free transfer. The 28‑year‑old has attracted interest from several clubs, with Girona now leading the race for his signature.

For the Ghanaian defender, a new chapter awaits, but Vallecas will always hold a special place in his heart.
