Giggs warns United must shield teenage prodigy JJ Gabriel from loan

Ryan Giggs, Manchester United’s record‑appearance holder, insists the 15‑year‑old academy prospect JJ Gabriel – dubbed the next Cristiano Ronaldo – must remain at Man Utd, arguing that Old Trafford is the best environment for his development as the Red Devils look to protect a generational talent.

Potential to break club record

Gabriel, who turns 16 in just under a month, could become United’s youngest ever player, overtaking David Gaskell who debuted at 16 years and 19 days. The teenager’s early promise has already drawn comparisons with the club’s historic prodigies.

He made his first‑team debut in a 2‑1 pre‑season win over Atletico Madrid and is expected to feature in a senior competitive match later this season. Last season he netted 26 goals in 29 Under‑18 games and has already been promoted to the Under‑21 squad.

Scouts have labelled him the next Cristiano Ronaldo, and he has begun the Premier League 2 campaign with two goals and two assists in as many games, signalling a bright start to senior reserve football.

Giggs urges United to keep him

Speaking on Rio Ferdinand’s YouTube channel, Giggs warned against loaning the youngster, saying, “You need to play, you need to play games… you also need minutes on the pitch.” He praised the club’s history of nurturing young talent and highlighted the support of former players Michael Carrick, Darren Fletcher and Jonny Evans.

He added, “Well, I think he is sort of a generational talent; he’s got to stay. There’s no point in going out on loan because he’s at the best place.” Giggs suggested loans become appropriate only when a player reaches 19 or 20 years of age.

Giggs noted that sometimes patience is required, but “you can’t not pick him and not have him train in the first team,” stressing that the teenager may be involved with the senior squad at any time over the coming months.

United will need to guard against external interest, with Chelsea reported to have sniffed around the starlet just last month, underscoring the urgency of securing his future at the club.
