Getafe problems threaten to stall Carvajal deal

Getafe problems threaten to stall Carvajal deal

Getafe will sign the experienced right‑back Dani Carvajal to fill the gap in its defence and allow the player to stay in the Greater Madrid area – but the club's current financial situation threatens to put the deal on ice. The photo by Pedro Castillo/GettyImages illustrates the situation.

Free Agent Carvajal

After his departure from Real Madrid, the 34‑year‑old veteran Dani Carvajal is currently listed as a club‑less player. This situation allows him to sign a contract even outside the regular transfer windows.

Carvajal has explicitly stated that he wants to find a new team, but the intended deal with FC Getafe is in jeopardy. According to the Spanish newspaper, Getafe is currently unable to finalize the contract. The situation highlights how closely contractual freedom is linked to league regulations.

A move to Getafe would have a special significance for the Spaniard, as the club is a suburban team of Madrid and Carvajal could therefore remain in his home region. President Ángel Torres confirmed the club's interest, but expressed doubts about a quick agreement.

Financial Hurdles at Getafe

Ángel Torres said on Chringuito TV: “There is nothing. Everything is broken,” after previously assuring that an agreement was close. When further questions were posed by the channel, he responded similarly tense and emphasized that “all parties must give the okay,” naming the Spanish La Liga, the player and Getafe itself.

Torres added: “There are no news and no agreement. You cannot break what was not agreed upon. We will try.” He also stated that “there will be nothing more to announce today.” These statements underline the precarious state of the intended transfer.

The financial regulations of the Spanish league require each team to have its own salary cap. Getafe is therefore said to have only €56.7 million available, while Real Madrid spends almost fourteen times that amount with €761 million. This discrepancy makes it difficult for Getafe to finance the salary of the Carvajal veteran.

A possible way out could be a special contract that runs under a different league category – an approach that has already been used several times in Barcelona. Whether Getafe can find such a solution remains to be seen.

Whether a possible back‑door deal, as occasionally used in Barcelona, is still feasible remains uncertain. Carvajal, who left the Royals in the summer of 2026 after his contract expired, has played 451 professional matches for Real Madrid and won the Champions League six times – an impressive culmination of his career in the capital.
