Getafe boss Bordalás warns of bottom after 17th place ahead of Ajax

Getafe find themselves in a precarious position after ten La Liga matches, sitting just one point above the relegation zone and preparing to face Ajax in the Conference League in just under two months. Coach José Bordalás has publicly warned that the club has "reached the bottom" and must act swiftly.

League standing and recent setbacks

Last weekend the Madrilenian side suffered a 4-0 loss away to Athletic Bilbao, a defeat that followed a 2-5 drubbing by FC Lugano three days earlier in European competition. Those heavy defeats have left the team languishing in 17th place, a stark drop from the seventh‑place finish they enjoyed last season.

Coach Bordalás demands immediate change

"I have pain and the whole team is obviously hurt," Bordalás told reporters. "It is a defeat and an image we cannot afford. I can say little else." He also responded to goalkeeper‑captain David Soria’s comment that Getafe’s level belongs to the second tier of Spanish football, saying, "I respect his opinion, he is an experienced captain, but we cannot permit the way we concede goals. We lack consistency and are now showing too much vulnerability."

The 62‑year‑old Spaniard stressed that his teams have traditionally been defensively solid, yet recent performances have exposed a frailty that must be corrected. "We must quickly turn a page, think about the next appointment and fix the mistakes that cost us goals and defeats," he added.

Looking ahead, Getafe host Sevilla next weekend before travelling to Brighton & Hove Albion for a Conference League tie the following week. The club’s schedule then leads to the much‑anticipated meeting with Ajax in Amsterdam, where they will hope to reverse their fortunes.

Over the next two months the Madrilenian side will travel to the Dutch capital, aiming to prove that they can climb out of the relegation battle and restore the stability that has defined Bordalás’s teams in the past.
