Germany: Gladbach dismisses coach Eugen Polanski after three defeats

Borussia Mönchengladbach has in Germany dismissed coach Eugen Polanski from the bench after only three competitive matches, reports the German media. The decision came a day after the 5-0 defeat to SC Freiburg in the Bundesliga. The departure was unexpected for the players and supporters.

Early departure and dramatic start to the season

Gladbach began the new season dramatically and lost the first three Bundesliga fixtures, leaving them still on zero points. In those three games twelve goals were conceded, while Gladbach themselves were only on target three times.

Sporting director Rouven Schröder expressed no confidence in Polanski after the defeat and reported that the coach had offered his resignation. Schröder emphasized that the club needs an immediate change of direction.

To date the club has not yet issued an official press release about Polanski's departure. The silence fuels speculation among fans and the press.

Polanski was appointed as head coach of Gladbach in September 2025, taking over from Gerardo Seoane. His contract began shortly before the start of the season, but ended abruptly after only three matches.

This is the second consecutive year that the club has dismissed a head coach after three fixtures; Seoane was also sacked after three games last season. Nevertheless, Gladbach finished that season twelfth in the Bundesliga, showing that recovery is possible.

The lightning‑quick dismissal underscores the low tolerance for a weak start, while the previous season shows that the club can later stabilise. What the next step will be remains unclear for now.
