Germany coach Jürgen Klopp must re‑motivate four unlucky players after debut

Jürgen Klopp, the DFB coach, started his debut in Amsterdam with great hopes, but four DFB stars experienced a bitter evening. William Laing reported that Germany, after an early lead of 1-0 against the Netherlands, only allowed the equaliser in stoppage time. The match was part of the Nations League.

Debut ends 1-1 against the Netherlands

The game remained at 1-0 for Germany until stoppage time, before the hosts scored the late equaliser. At the press conference in the catacombs of the Johan Cruyff Arena, Klopp said: “I would have very much liked to win, but I did not have the impression that the equaliser was undeserved.”

He did not let the late goal overshadow him. He emphasized: “The intensity, the willingness, the passion we showed were good.” He also stated that he was satisfied with the performance in many moments.

Klopp praises ter Stegen and debutants

Goalkeeper Marc‑André ter Stegen was particularly highlighted, who after early uncertainties in the second half repeatedly prevented the equaliser. Klopp described his performance as “very, very good”. The three debutants Philipp Treu, Younes Ebnoutalib and Yannik Engelhardt also received praise: “The boys gave everything absolutely.”

Musiala ruled out due to muscle tear

Just before kickoff, Jamal Musiala, who was slated for the starting lineup, had to leave the field due to an injury. A day later the DFB confirmed that the 23‑year‑old had suffered a muscle fibre tear in his thigh and would therefore miss the next three international matches. Musiala had already suffered a tibia fracture and an ankle dislocation at the club World Cup in the summer of 2025. Since the start of the year Musiala has shown repeated collapse episodes in two Bayern test matches. He explained that the setbacks were due to a neurological dysfunction, which, however, is treatable.

Klopp launches aggressive pressing against the Netherlands in Amsterdam

Klopp stated that he is not a psychologist, but he recognises the pressure on Musiala. He said: “We can assume that there is also pressure that something like this does not happen.” He further noted that Musiala continues to get injured despite the setbacks, which is a step towards a return to normality.

After the match, Jürgen Klopp embraced Bayern star Serge Gnabry, after he had caused the equaliser. With this the coach made clear that he wants to rebuild the four affected DFB stars quickly.

Already after the match Klopp emphasised that, as national coach, he must provide immediate mental support to strengthen the confidence of the affected players.

Germany suffers double loss of Musiala and Havertz in the Nations League

The contrast between a promising start and the unlucky outcome highlights that Klopp, besides tactical work, must also provide intensive mental care to stabilise his unlucky ones and to solidify the team for the upcoming Nations League matches.
