Gent warned by what coach De Mil saw in Göteborg ahead of European tie

KAA Gent will face IFK Göteborg in the third qualifying round of the Conference League on Thursday, after eliminating Ukrainian side Cherkasy, with coach Rik De Mil having scouted the Swedish opponent in person on Sunday.

"Ik ben hier vorige zondag nog geweest om hun thuiswedstrijd bij te wonen en toch ook eens de sfeer te voelen. Die was ronduit geweldig in een vol huis, met fans die de ploeg vooruit weten te stuwen," De Mil told, noting the Swedes possess speed up front and can strike through organised possession or rapid counter‑attacks. He stressed Gent must stay vigilant on ball loss and avoid granting the home side too much freedom.

He also saw opportunities for his own side, observing that Göteborg leaves gaps during transitions, allowing Gent to create chances if it moves quickly and precisely forward.

Gent’s previous round against Cherkasy was at a lower level, and De Mil said a more complete performance will be required on Thursday to secure a strong position for the return leg.

The Buffaloes will be without striker Wilfried Kanga, who continues to struggle with a foot injury that kept him out against Cherkasy, forcing De Mil to look for alternative attacking options.
