Gent’s comeback and Genk’s revival reshape Belgian title race
Under the bright floodlights at the Zulte Waregem stadium on Saturday, Ibrahima Cisse slipped the ball past a bewildered Brent Gabriel to give KAA Gent an early lead, while a day later Genk hammered Courtrai 3‑0, propelling both clubs back into the hunt for the Jupiler Pro League title.
Gent reclaim top spot
KAA Gent secured a 0‑2 victory on the turf of Zulte Waregem in the eighth round of the Jupiler Pro League, lifting them back to the summit of the championnat de Belgique with 22 points. Ibrahima Cisse perfectly launched the Buffalos, capitalising on Brent Gabriel’s error in the 12th minute to open the scoring.
The Flemish goalkeeper recovered ten minutes later, denying Momodou Sonko a chance, while the Buffalos pressed in the second half. Gabriel again intervened, this time on Tibe De Vlieger’s centre‑shot in the 51st minute, keeping the score level.
Zulte Waregem fought back, with Davy Roef allowing a hot ball to cross his line after a defender’s deflected cross in the 65th minute, and Malick Mbaye’s heavy tackle in the 74th left his side a man down. In added time, Michel‑Ange Balikwisha finished the decisive goal (90+2), sealing the win.

Genk surge to sixth
Genk responded on their own ground, beating Courtrai 3‑0 in the same round and climbing to sixth place in the first division with 12 points. Daan Heymans perfectly launched the encounter, volleying home in the 3rd minute to give the Limbourgeois the lead.
Thierry Ambrose’s early volley missed narrowly, but Harrison Murray‑Campbell’s own‑goal in the 13th minute doubled Genk’s advantage. Heymans threatened again in the 17th, and the match stayed lively.
Courtrai, under new Austrian coach Daniel Beichler, saw Shandre Campbell sent off after the break (49th minute). Patrik Gunnarsson saved Heymans later, before Rafiu Durosinmi finished from a perfect service by the former Carolo in the 63rd minute.
The Courtrai side, now on 3 points, sit 16th, level with Cercle Brugge and Malines, who have yet to record a win.
