Genoa De Rossi backs Stolz: club heritage deserves a chance
On Genoa’s training pitch, coach Daniele De Rossi watches Austrian goalkeeper Stolz drill while the club’s backroom staff scrutinises every save. The squad is reassessing its goalkeeping options after the departure of Nicola Leali, with Justin Bijlow slated as starter despite a history of physical problems.
De Rossi told reporters, "We are evaluating him, we are doing it both in training and in match. He does good things and other less good, he is a heritage of Genoa: I didn’t know him, I saw him on Wyscout and I liked him." He added that his assessment covers both practice sessions and friendly matches.
The coach explained that Genoa wants to give the Austrian the time needed to prove his worth before a final decision, stating, "In these weeks we will evaluate him, it is right to give him a chance because he is a player of the club. In the end we will decide together." He reiterated that Stolz is considered a valuable asset of the club.
Meanwhile, the club continues to monitor the market, with Burnley’s 2004‑born goalkeeper Max Weiß listed as a potential target should Genoa decide to strengthen the department. Weiß, a young prospect, could represent an opportunity if the club chooses to act.
The coming weeks will be decisive in defining the pecking order between the posts and identifying Bijlow’s deputy ahead of the new season. The aim is to settle the hierarchy before competitive fixtures begin.
