Gaz Drinkwater warns Carrick's United reign could end by Christmas
Inside the cramped studio of the Devil's Advocate podcast, co‑host Gaz Drinkwater leaned forward as the clock ticked past midnight, declaring that the "writing is on the wall" for Michael Carrick at Manchester United. He warned that the former midfielder is likely to be dismissed before the Christmas break, a prospect that hangs over Old Trafford like a dark cloud.
United’s precarious league position
After five Premier League matches United sit twelfth with five points, matching their worst start to a season in the competition’s history. The club’s joint‑worst return at this stage has intensified scrutiny of Carrick’s tactics and man‑management.
Recent results fuel the fire
A late Matheus Cunha equaliser salvaged a point against Fulham, sparing Carrick the embarrassment of a defeat and halting a run of three straight losses in all competitions. The goal also prevented United from heading into the long international break on a losing streak.
The slump included a humiliating Carabao Cup exit, where United surrendered a two‑goal lead to Brighton at Old Trafford, followed by a home derby loss to Manchester City.
Drinkwater’s assessment
Despite calling an immediate dismissal "reckless" and "trigger‑happy", Drinkwater insisted the outcome is inevitable. "Obviously Michael Carrick hasn't done enough to get sacked," he said, adding that a sacking now would be "silly" and that Carrick needs at least ten Premier League games to be judged properly.
He argued the team’s quality is lacking, describing the passing as "ridiculous" and the football as "loose touches, horrible". Drinkwater concluded that even if Carrick were to stay, it would not fix the underlying issues.
What lies ahead
With the festive period looming, United face a crucial window to reverse fortunes before the international break. The pressure on Carrick will only mount if the club fails to secure a win in the remaining fixtures before Christmas.
