Gary Neville warns Man Utd over JJ Gabriel’s exit hopes

Fifteen‑year‑old JJ Gabriel has told Manchester United he wishes to leave on his sixteenth birthday, sparking a media storm that has seen former defender Gary Neville take umbrage with the youngster’s father and agent, while Michael Carrick issued a measured response on behalf of the club.

Gabriel’s rise and contract hopes

Gabriel joined Old Trafford at eleven and quickly earned the nickname “Kid Messi’”, with many branding him a future star. He netted 26 goals in 29 appearances across the U18 Premier League and FA Youth Cup last season, prompting United to plot a fast‑track route to the first team, beginning with the Carabao Cup tie against Brighton on Wednesday night.

United had envisioned a rich future for the teenager, but those plans have gone up in flames only weeks before his sixteenth birthday, as rumours of his desire to quit intensified.

Neville’s criticism of the representatives

Neville, speaking on The Overlap, said: “But I just don’t see the logic from any representatives of a 15‑year‑old boy who think it’s a good idea to put his name in lights right now. You want to try and sort of douse the flames, don’t you? You don’t want to add fuel to a fire when you have got basically…”.

Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright replied, “You want to keep him under cover?” adding to the growing debate over the player’s future.

Carrick stresses player welfare

Carrick told the Manchester Evening News: “I just think we’ve got to be really careful of the whole situation, you know. He’s a young boy, he’s 15, and for me, definitely, and from a club point of view, is looking after our younger players, their welfare, their well‑being, their exposure, and I think we’ve got to be really, all of us, I think we’ve got to be really conscious of that, really, in this situation.”

When asked about his involvement, Carrick added: “No, as a club for sure, we’re all involved in those conversations. I just think we’ve got to be very careful, you know, of that.” The manager echoed this, stressing the need to protect “the welfare, the care and the attention of JJ as a child”.

Transfer insider Graeme Bailey has repeatedly suggested Chelsea remain keen on signing Gabriel, despite the complexities of a Premier League move. A report in The Sun even hinted United’s worst nightmare could be a switch to a rival club.

United have refused to green‑light an exit and are planning further talks with Gabriel and his representatives, leaving the youngster’s immediate future uncertain as the club balances his development with the intense public pressure.
