Future of this Sunderland midfielder: A good move for both parties

In an update, Regis Le Bris told the Sunderland Echo that the future of 33‑year‑old midfielder Granit Xhaka is settled, confirming his contract at the Stadium of Light runs until the summer of 2028 and that the Swiss international wants to remain with the club.

Le Bris said, “This topic is closed,” adding that Xhaka has been crystal clear about his intentions, loves Sunderland, wants to stay, and is “a good captain, a great leader.”

Xhaka enjoyed an impressive run of form in English football at the Wearside club last season, making 36 appearances, scoring once and providing six assists across all competitions, which highlighted his experience among Premier League midfielders.

His current deal, set to expire in the summer of 2028, means Sunderland have no immediate pressure to sell him during this transfer window.

The Swiss midfielder loves a tackle, reads danger well, clears the ball when needed and is a tidy passer; he also generates power from long‑range shots and creates chances with vision, capable of playing as a defensive or box‑to‑box midfielder.

At 33, Xhaka is past his prime but his leadership qualities make him an integral member of Le Bris’ squad, able to help the Black Cats compete on all fronts in the coming years.

Retaining Xhaka is therefore a good move for both the player and the Premier League side this off‑season, reinforcing Sunderland’s midfield without the need for a sale.
