Full-circle move: Katie McCabe swaps Arsenal for Chelsea

Republic of Ireland captain Katie McCabe is set for a new challenge in west London, joining Chelsea after more than a decade with rivals Arsenal. The 30‑year‑old leaves the Gunners for the first time in over ten years, signing a three‑year contract with an optional extra year. McCabe will start the 2024‑25 season in blue.

Eleven years with the Gunners

McCabe spent 11 years in the red of Arsenal, making more than 300 appearances and winning every major honour available. Her trophy cabinet includes the UEFA Women’s Champions League title secured in 2025. She first arrived at Arsenal at 20 years old after moving from Shelbourne in Ireland.

Three-year deal and early integration

The 30‑year‑old signed a three‑year deal with Chelsea that includes an option for a further year. She arrived before the full squad returned for pre‑season to get to know the club and settle in quickly. McCabe said, “I think for me, it was making sure I was coming in and getting my head down, getting to work straight away, and understanding how we were going to play and getting relationships on the pitch as quick as possible in order for us to start strong and fast this season.”

A full‑circle moment at Stamford Bridge

Having watched Chelsea from afar as a child, McCabe cites Irish star Damien Duff and a Mourinho documentary as inspirations. She described her move as a “full‑circle moment” ahead of the first game of the season against Villa, recalling the era when Mourinho first signed for Chelsea and teammates like Arjen Robben featured. McCabe added that playing at the historic Stamford Bridge is a dream she is excited to fulfil.

Chelsea announced that Stamford Bridge will serve as their permanent Women’s Super League home this season, ending their use of Kingsmeadow for league fixtures. All league matches will now be played at Stamford Bridge, while AFC Wimbledon will host the club’s Champions League and domestic cup games. McCabe said she likes playing at Stamford Bridge and believes the venue offers a great atmosphere, especially for London derbies.

Early integration helped McCabe bond with teammates Ellie Carpenter, Nat Björn, Nay Girma and Erin Cuthbert. Cuthbert offered a familiar face, having known McCabe for more than a decade after briefly crossing paths at Glasgow City as teenagers. McCabe recalled they played about 20 minutes together for Glasgow City around the 2012‑13 season.

McCabe feels the timing is right for Chelsea to push attendances and aim to match or better their London rivals. She emphasized that more ambition is needed to give Chelsea fans a platform to increase support week in, week out. The Republic of Ireland captain looks forward to contributing to the Blues’ success in the Women’s Super League and beyond.
