FSG weigh up £47 million Araujo fee amid Liverpool doubts

Ronald Araujo arrived at Liverpool on a season‑long loan from Barcelona, with the Reds holding an option to sign the 27‑year‑old Uruguayan permanently for €55 million (£47 million / $62.5 million), a fee already agreed with Barcelona.

Why Liverpool pursued the defender

Andoni Iraola, who took charge of Liverpool earlier this season, quickly inserted Araujo into his starting XI after the defender missed the first two Premier League fixtures. Despite being a natural centre‑back, Araujo has featured at right‑back in the club’s last three league games, pushing Jeremie Frimpong down the pecking order.

The loan spell has been described as “excellent” by club insiders, and Iraola praised the Uruguayan’s adaptability, physical robustness and humility after his first start at Anfield.

FSG’s financial dilemma

Fenwick Sports Group (FSG), Liverpool’s owners, are reputed to back “major financial investments in players they believe have greater long‑term market potential”. The £47 million price tag for Araujo is said to clash with that recruitment strategy, prompting doubts about making the deal permanent.

In his own words, Iraola said, “I’m very happy for him… he’s needed at right‑back, at centre‑back, and he can adapt to any position. Physically he’s exceeded our expectations and he shows great spirit.”

The manager also noted the need for Araujo to improve his English to fully integrate with teammates, hinting at a longer‑term plan should the permanent move go ahead.

Should FSG decide against the purchase, Liverpool would need to explore alternative options to fill the defensive roles Araujo has begun to occupy, while the Uruguayan’s future at Anfield remains uncertain.
