Frustration mounts as Manchester City still waits for Premier League verdict

Frustration is rising as Manchester City awaits the outcome of a high‑profile trial over alleged Premier League financial rule breaches, a case that began with a February 2023 accusation and involved more than one hundred charges spanning the 2009‑2018 period.

Accusations and financial details

The Premier League alleges that City failed to supply accurate figures on sponsorship revenue, billing, operational costs and player salaries for six seasons, and also omitted full details of former manager Roberto Mancini’s earnings during his tenure.

In addition, the English league claims the club breached UEFA Financial Fair Play rules for five years and did not fully cooperate with the Premier League’s investigation.

Legal timeline and verdict delay

The independent commission that examined the accusations began hearings exactly two years ago, with a twelve‑week trial that concluded in December 2024, yet no public verdict has been issued.

City has consistently denied every allegation, maintaining that the claims are unfounded.

Reactions from officials and clubs

Sports lawyer Nick De Marco described the waiting period as “the most incredible delay” in a case dubbed the “trial of the century”, warning that sport arbitration is not necessarily faster than courts.

David Pannick of Blackstone Chambers has been retained to represent Manchester City, while De Marco, who previously advised Leicester City, is not involved in the current dispute.

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters admitted the verdict is taking longer than expected, stating he cannot comment further due to confidentiality and that the process must run its course.

Arsenal chief executive Richard Garlick told the protracted saga “has been dragging on for a long time” and urged a swift resolution, noting that clubs and fans alike crave clarity.

Despite the legal cloud, City will continue business as usual; Enzo Maresca’s side will focus on on‑field matters, preparing for a League Cup tie against Norwich City on Thursday and a Premier League clash with Sunderland on Sunday.
