From World Cup hero to courtroom: Ivan Toney’s London reckoning
Ivan Toney, who played for England at the World Cup, now faces a court case after being accused of assault in a London nightclub. The incident has put the spotlight on justice for the former World Cup player.
Toney, who scored 42 goals in 49 matches across all competitions for Al‑Ahli in Saudi Arabia last season, remains at the club despite the pending legal matter. His club situation has not changed.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed Toney was charged with assault causing actual bodily harm. The accusation stems from an incident on 6 December 2025 at a nightclub on Wardour Street in Soho, central London.
A formal charge was filed on 31 July, linking Toney to the alleged assault that night. Authorities have not released further details.
He is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on 24 September to formally respond to the charge. People close to the player say he is surprised by the accusation and intends to defend himself and clear his name.
The timing of the case drew extra attention because it came just days after Toney’s participation in the 2026 World Cup. He was selected for England’s squad under head coach Thomas Tuchel and started the third-place playoff against France.
In that match, England beat France 6‑4 to claim the bronze medal. Toney played the full 90 minutes but did not score, contributing little in the World Cup.
Before joining Al‑Ahli in 2024, Toney was a key figure at Brentford, establishing himself as one of England’s most prominent strikers. While his club career continues in Saudi Arabia, the court hearing on 24 September will pull his focus away from the pitch.
