From Champions League glory to Kreisliga: Niklas Sule’s stark comeback
Former Germany defender Niklas Sule, a 30‑year‑old Champions League winner with Bayern Munich, retired after the 2025/26 Bundesliga season with Borussia Dortmund, yet months later he turned up in a yellow shirt for ninth‑tier SV Tiefenbach, scoring a header on his debut.
Peak European Success
He spent five years at Bayern Munich from 2017 to 2022, winning the Bundesliga five times and lifting the Champions League trophy in the 2019/20 campaign.
During that spell he made 171 appearances for the Bavarian giants.
He then moved to Borussia Dortmund, where he logged 110 appearances over four seasons at Signal Iduna Park.
Sule was part of Dortmund’s squad for the 2024 Champions League final.
Unexpected Return in the Kreisliga
Injuries in his final two professional seasons restricted him to just 19 Bundesliga starts.
Having already endured two ACL injuries, a further serious knee issue in April forced him off after 42 minutes in a loss to Hoffenheim.
He announced his retirement at the end of the 2025/26 Bundesliga campaign, describing the decision as emotional.
On the Spielmacher podcast Sule recalled crying for ten minutes after the team doctor’s knee test suggested a third ACL tear.
Champions League winner Sule signs for ninth‑tier club
An MRI the next day showed no new ACL injury, prompting him to declare his career over that summer.
Months after retiring, Sule appeared for ninth‑tier German side SV Tiefenbach in the Kreisliga Baden‑Wurttemberg.
He was shown playing as a midfielder, spraying the ball across the centre and scoring a powerful header on his debut.
Observers noted he has bulked up since his days as a Champions League winner.
The club’s yellow strip mirrors the colour he wore at Dortmund.
Coach Jason Walzel said Sule is enjoying a more offensive role and has been present at training on Saturday, Thursday and Friday.
Walzel added that the boys are happy to have him and described him as a great guy.
Fans greeted him with selfies, autographs and evident delight at seeing a former Germany international on their pitch.
The contrast between his former household‑name status and the amateur setting was highlighted by the enthusiastic response.
The shift from Champions League glory with Bayern and Dortmund to a modest role in the Kreisliga underscores Sule’s love for the game despite the injuries that ended his professional career.
