From €80 million to free agent: Juventus cut ties with Arthur
Juventus and 30‑year‑old Brazilian midfielder Arthur Melo have mutually terminated his contract, ending a six‑year association that began with an €80 million transfer. The Turin side confirmed the agreement, leaving the former Barcelona player without a club as he looks for a new opportunity.
Loan trail and lack of impact
After joining Juventus, Arthur was sent on successive season‑long loans to Liverpool, Fiorentina, Girona and Gremio. Each loan lasted a single year, and he never managed to cement a regular starting place at any of those clubs. The pattern of yearly moves highlighted his struggle to replicate his early promise.
In none of those teams did Arthur consolidate his best version, a fact underscored by the fact that he was loaned out each season rather than being retained permanently. The constant change of environment prevented him from establishing continuity on the pitch.
From €80 million purchase to €4 million market value
Arthur arrived at FC Barcelona in 2018, where he was compared to his idol Iniesta and was expected to become a key playmaker. After two seasons he departed the Catalan club, moving on to Juventus where expectations were high.
Juventus paid €80 million for the midfielder in 2020, but his market valuation has now fallen to roughly €4 million. The steep depreciation reflects his limited impact during the loan spells and the broader market dynamics.
During the pre‑season for the 2026/27 campaign, Arthur featured under Luciano Spalletti and was included in the squad list. Spalletti praised his attitude in training and on the field, yet those commendations were insufficient to secure a contract extension.
With inflated prices still circulating in the transfer market, Arthur’s future remains uncertain. The former Juventus player will now rely on potential suitors to offer a new contract, a prospect that appears increasingly challenging given his current valuation.
