Free‑transfer gamble: Arsenal eye John Stones as Saliba cover

Arsenal are weighing a free‑transfer for 32‑year‑old John Stones, despite his 164 matches missed over the past 11 seasons, as they seek cover for injured defender William Saliba, whose back problem could keep him out for four to five months.

William Saliba appears likely to miss a spell on the sidelines because of a back problem that has troubled him for months. Most reports suggest surgery is a likely outcome, with a recovery period of four to five months being mooted.

If Saliba’s injury proves serious, Arsenal will need cover. The club have reportedly identified John Stones as a short‑term freebie fix to fill the gap.

The former Manchester City defender, now 32, is available on a free transfer after running down his contract at the Etihad. A report quoted: “Arsenal are considering John Stones as a short‑term freebie fix if William Saliba’s injury proves to be serious.”

Few would question Stones’ quality; he has won everything there is to win and, at 32, should still have plenty left to offer. The absence of a transfer fee would also be attractive in a summer when Arsenal are looking to complete significant business.

Manchester City were reportedly open to extending Stones’ contract but had concerns over his injury record and wanted to see how his season unfolded. City ultimately decided not to offer him a new contract.

Stones’ injury history spans two pages, with 164 matches missed for club and country, including 24 games missed last season and 34 the campaign before, due to recurring hamstring and thigh problems. Arsenal will need to weigh this extensive record before committing.
