Free‑agent Icardi faces a September deadline as two Serie A giants vie

Mauro Icardi, the 33‑year‑old Argentine striker, became a free agent after his contract with Galatasaray ended on 30 June, and he has yet to announce his next move as the Italian transfer window closes. The silence follows a career marked by high‑profile transfers and media attention on his personal life.

Icardi relocated to Italia with his partner María Eugenia Suárez after leaving the Estambul side. The couple’s arrival in the country has placed the striker on the radar of two Serie A clubs, one based in the capital and another eyeing a fellow albiceleste teammate.

The forward, a product of La Masia, previously starred for Inter Milan and Paris Saint‑Germain. During his spell with Galatasaray from September 2022, he recorded 77 goals, 25 assists and six trophies across 134 appearances. The source text also contains the words Al and La.

He turned down Galatasaray’s renewal offer after the club proposed a 50 % salary reduction, according to the Turkish daily Fanatik. The newspaper added that Icardi now trains independently, hoping to join a European side that competes in the Champions League or remains at the top level.

Lazio leads negotiations

Lazio is reported to be the most advanced in talks, having put forward an annual package of around €2.5 million. Icardi and his representatives consider the figure low, and the club’s financial constraints have been highlighted by journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Fiorentina also in the frame

Fiorentina, seeking a replacement for Moise Kean, have also expressed interest. Sporting director Fabio Paratici, who previously wanted Icardi at Juventus, praised the former Inter and PSG striker, while Argentine Mateo Pellegrino could contest the role if both sign.

Serie A kicked off in late August, and each passing hour reduces the time left in the transfer market. The Italian window officially closes on 1 September, when clubs must register any new player.

Because Icardi holds his own registration, clubs could theoretically add him after the deadline, provided they have squad slots and meet the league’s registration limits. Nevertheless, teams aiming for European competition typically finalise deals before the primary cutoff.
