Frans Krätzig loses spot at RB Salzburg after disappointing loan

Robbie Jay Barratt photographed the young Franz Krätzig in the Bayern kit, but despite a brief stir he was hardly used in competitive matches – a circumstance that led to a series of loan deals and eventually put his place at RB Salzburg at risk.

Loan spells without a permanent contract

After the 2023/24 season, in which Krätzig made only seven competitive appearances for FC Bayern between September and December, loan deals followed with Austria Wien, VfB Stuttgart and 1. FC Heidenheim. None of these clubs wanted or could sign the 23‑year‑old on a permanent basis.

Salzburg's investment and early successes

In the summer of 2025 RB Salzburg finally signed a long‑term contract with Krätzig, investing €3.5 million. In his first season at the Austrian top‑flight club he established himself in the left‑back position and provided seven goals in the league.

In the current season Krätzig has scored one goal, set up another, but a thigh injury initially cost him his starting place. At the moment Dominik Schmid is ahead, while Krätzig fights to return either as a left‑back or as a left winger.

The contract runs until 2029, and Krätzig says he feels comfortable at the club. Nevertheless his national outlook is weak, as the Austrian league, in the player's view, is not strong enough to improve his chances of making the Austrian national team.

Krätzig's goal remains clear: to win back his starting spot, which however depends on his long‑term fitness. A consistently healthy left foot would be decisive for that.
