Former Premier League star Cattermole sacked as Gateshead falter
Gateshead announced on Sunday that they have dismissed manager Lee Cattermole after less than four months in charge, following a run of six successive league defeats. The former Sunderland icon secured only one win from twelve league games and the club’s players and staff remain unpaid for September.
Poor run seals Cattermole's exit
Gateshead have endured six successive league defeats, the latest being a 2‑1 home loss to Worthing that left them eight points adrift of safety at the foot of the National League. He was appointed in June on a two‑year contract. The club sit bottom of the fifth‑tier and have collected just four points from their opening twelve games this season. The string of poor results prompted the Sunday decision to part company with Lee Cattermole.
Cattermole, a former Premier League midfielder and Sunderland icon, managed only one victory in twelve league matches during his brief tenure. It was also the first senior managerial role of his coaching career after working with Middlesbrough and Bristol Rovers since retiring in 2020.
Assistant manager Martin Smith also departed the club with immediate effect, as confirmed in a statement posted on X. Ben Clark has been installed as caretaker manager and will lead the side against FC Halifax Town next weekend. The club thanked both Cattermole and Smith for their efforts and wished them success in future endeavours.

Financial turmoil leaves staff unpaid
Players and staff have not received their wages for September, a situation the club acknowledged in a further X post. The financial strain follows majority shareholder Mark Nellist’s announcement that he will withdraw his funding support and relinquish his shares to fellow shareholder Stephen Paylor. The proposed transfer of ownership requires approval from Regulator, but the club warned that approval appears unlikely. Paylor has indicated he cannot fund the club alone and was counting on joint investment from a third party, whose initial strong interest now seems to have faded. In response, Gateshead have appealed to remaining shareholders for continued financial backing, hoping the extra time will enable fresh investment to be secured.
Gateshead are in their fifth season back in the National League after earning promotion in 2022. Under former manager Rob Elliott, the club finished eighteenth last term, eight points above the relegation zone. The current crisis therefore arrives at a precarious moment for a side still consolidating its league status.
The club’s statement concluded that securing new investment remains essential for the future, with the appeal to shareholders aimed at stabilising operations and preventing further wage delays.
