Former Premier League boss Pepe Mel in intensive care as clubs rally

At the Virgen del Rocio Hospital in Seville, 63‑year‑old former Premier League boss Pepe Mel lies in intensive care after surgery for a stroke suffered on Sunday. His family disclosed the incident on 2 November 2026 and Real Betis, the club he managed in two spells, announced the news at their request.

West Bromwich Albion spell

The Spanish coach arrived in January 2014 when the Hawthorns were four points above the Premier League relegation zone, after Steve Clarke had been dismissed the previous month. Over 17 matches he secured three wins, six draws and eight defeats. West Brom finished 17th in the Premier League, three points clear of relegated Norwich City. Mel was dismissed 24 hours after the final day of the season.

Support and career reflections

His brief tenure also saw him manage the fallout from striker Nicolas Anelka's departure after a controversial ‘quenelle’ celebration. He later had to handle a dressing‑room bust‑up between Saido Berahino and James Morrison. Mel returned to Real Betis later in 2014, guiding the club to a second promotion to LaLiga, having previously achieved promotion in 2011.

Earlier he had led Rayo Vallecano to promotion to Spain's second tier. Rayo Vallecano issued a statement wishing him a swift and complete recovery. LaLiga also sent a message of support, wishing him a speedy recovery. Over his career Mel has managed 16 different clubs, most recently Moroccan side IR Tanger, which he left earlier this year.
