Former KV Mechelen defender Siemen Voet shines at 1. FC Saarbrücken

The 26‑year-old Belgian centre-back Siemen Voet is making a striking start at 1. FC Saarbrücken: in his first seven competitive matches he has already scored four goals, making him the most prolific defender in the 3. Liga and the club’s top scorer for Saarbrücken.

At 1860 Munich, Voet played a full season, 37 competitive matches, but he remained without a single goal. He was a regular in the defence there, but his scoring ability went untapped.

From 1860 Munich to Saarbrücken

Last summer, Saarbrücken took advantage of the problems at 1860 Munich and signed the Belgian. The move gave Voet a new environment in which he suddenly also became a goal scorer. For Voet the transfer meant a fresh start.

Voet developed in the youth academy of Club Brugge, after which he took his first steps in professional football via KV Mechelen, PEC Zwolle and Fortuna Sittard. He later ended up at Slovan Bratislava, where he even played in the Champions League. At Slovan he got the chance to play against the Spanish giant Atlético Madrid.

Goal‑scoring run and Champions League memories

In the Champions League he faced Atlético Madrid among others, a period he later described as both a high point and a low point. He calls that phase a mix of success and disappointment. Shortly afterwards he suddenly disappeared from the squad and moved to 1860 Munich.

“I have never scored as many goals in my career as I have at FCS,” Voet tells in an extensive interview with liga3‑online. He offers no definitive explanation, but jokes that the air in Saarland might play a role.

His best strike came against Sonnenhof Großaspach, where he scored the decisive goal in extremis in a 2‑1 victory. “Every player hopes to score in the final second and see the stadium explode,” Voet said after that action.

The contrast between a goalless spell at 1860 Munich and a four‑goal run in just seven matches at Saarbrücken underscores how the environment can affect his game. For Voet this means a new phase in which he both defends and scores regularly.
