Football Video Support reshapes Ligue 3 with coach challenges

On a bright Friday morning at the multiplex that opens the Ligue 3 season, the French third division will witness the debut of Football Video Support, a system that lets coaches contest referee decisions using video evidence. The rollout begins with the first‑day fixtures of the 2026‑2027 campaign and marks a historic shift in how matches are overseen.

It is not the traditional VAR that will be used, but a distinct Football Video Support (FVS) framework that arrives in Ligue 3 this season, with the first activation scheduled for Friday’s opening matches. The federation has announced that the new system will sit alongside the existing officiating structure from the outset.

The championship will experiment with a "challenge" mechanism inspired by the NBA, allowing each head coach to request a review of specific incidents during play. This experimental approach aims to bring a fresh tactical element to the French third tier.

According to the broadcaster, the FVS is a lighter alternative to the VAR employed in Ligue 1, and it is defined as "a device that enables teams to ask for the examination of a limited number of match incidents using available broadcast images." The reduced technical footprint is intended to suit the resources of Ligue 3 clubs.

During a match, the head coach must raise a finger in the air and present a card to the fourth official. The fourth official then informs the central referee of the request, which is formally termed a "challenge" in the official communiqué.

The presence of a fourth official is highlighted by the French Football Federation as a step toward the professionalisation of the league. This additional official will manage the challenge process and ensure smooth communication with the referee.

A challenge can only be lodged in cases of a manifest error or a serious missed incident, and the coach must specify the category of the request. The four categories available those used by VAR, ensuring consistency across French football’s officiating tiers.

Each head coach is allotted two challenges per match, giving a total of four challenge cards on the field. If a challenge is successful, the coach retains the card for the remainder of the game, allowing strategic use of the limited opportunities.

Le Logo of Ligue 3 Betclic for the 2026‑2027 season is displayed by DR Ligue 3 Betclic, underscoring the commercial partnership that accompanies the introduction of the new system. This visual branding accompanies all communications about the Football Video Support rollout.
