Fonseca reshapes Lyon defence after Niakhaté injury for Lens

As the floodlights flicker on Stade Bollaert on Friday evening, Olympique Lyon prepare for a 20:45 kick‑off against Lens without their central defender Moussa Niakhaté, who has been ruled out with a hamstring injury. Coach Paulo Fonseca will have to adjust his back line, opting for an unexpected partnership to compensate for the loss.

Injury forces defensive reshuffle

Moussa Niakhaté’s hamstring problem means the French club must compose without him for the trip to Lens on Friday night. The defender’s absence has been confirmed, leaving Fonseca to rethink his defensive set‑up.

According to Le Progrès, Fonseca already has a precise solution: he could pair Dutch youngster Ruben Kluivert with Félix Bacher in the centre of Lyon’s defence. This unprecedented partnership would give Kluivert valuable minutes in a demanding fixture against the Sang et Or.

Fonseca weighs tactical alternatives

Clinton Mata is also in the coach’s considerations, with the possibility of deploying him on the right side to bolster the team’s defensive balance.

The staff must factor in player freshness after the international break; Zachary Athekame, who has featured heavily in recent weeks, may be rotated to maintain squad stamina.

Fonseca could retain his diamond formation, yet he retains the option to shift to a 4‑3‑3 depending on the role he assigns to Corentin Tolisso, adding further tactical flexibility.

Both Félix Bacher and Ruben Kluivert are expected to start as central defenders for the Friday night encounter at Lens, offering a fresh axis for the Lyon side.

The Lyon eleven will therefore keep a few surprises in reserve for the match, aiming to offset the setback caused by Niakhaté’s injury.
