Foden's cheeky gesture fuels City’s derby win drama

As the crowd at Old Trafford roared, England midfielder Phil Foden slipped past a group of Man Utd supporters, flashing a 1‑0 finger gesture after his Man City side clinched a derby win, despite being sent off in the 23rd minute for a challenge on Bruno Fernandes.

Foden’s red card reshapes City’s plan

Foden’s straight red for kicking out at Bruno Fernandes left Enzo Maresca’s City with ten men early in the game. Maresca told reporters the dismissal forced a tactical rethink but praised the squad’s spirit. The England midfielder now faces a three‑match suspension, meaning he will miss the upcoming Carabao Cup tie with Norwich and Premier League games against Sunderland and Liverpool. Haaland’s hour‑mark winner seals derby

Erling Haaland broke the deadlock on the hour‑mark, directing Josko Gvardiol’s cross from a tight angle into the net to silence the Theatre of Dreams. The goal was initially ruled out for offside by Michael Oliver before VAR reversed the decision. Gianluigi Donnarumma later produced a fine save to deny Bryan Mbeumo, preserving City’s third successive clean sheet in all competitions.

City’s victory kept the club on a 100 per cent start to the Premier League season, leaving them level on points with champions Arsenal, who had beaten Sunderland 24 hours earlier. United remain down in 13th place with only four points.

Looking ahead, City will aim for a fifth straight league win when they host Sunderland at the Etihad. United travel to Fulham in search of their second Premier League triumph.

Foden’s post‑match video, in which he gestures 1‑0 to the booing crowd, quickly went viral, underscoring the lingering tension of the Manchester Derby. The Red atmosphere at Old Trafford highlighted how fiercely contested the rivalry remains.
