Floyd Samba delivers a brace for Manchester City and tempts the DFB

Floyd Samba surprised on his debut for Manchester City with a brace in the 5‑0 victory over Norwich City in the League Cup and could now have a big future in the DFB shirt, after having already played for the English youth teams. The 17‑year‑old midfielder showed immediate class.

Debut feeling and confidence

"What a debut," said the 17‑year‑old Floyd Samba after his brace in his first professional match for Manchester City. He added that the two goals in the 5‑0 win (2‑0) against Norwich City in the League Cup were "just the beginning." The young midfielder looked visibly thrilled.

The teenager was nominated for the upcoming Five Nations tournament in Spain (22 Sep to 4 Oct) for the first time in the German U19 national team. Previously he had already played for the English U16 and U17 teams and was even nominated for France's U16, but did not get any playing time.

Family background and path to the professional

Floyd Samba is the son of former Bundesliga professional Christopher Samba, who moved from Sedan to Hertha BSC in 2004 and later played for Blackburn Rovers, the Republic of Congo, Russian and Greek clubs. Christopher earned 26 caps for Congo between 2004 and 2013, before ending his career at Aston Villa in 2018.

Floyd joined Manchester City as a youth player, where he has been active since the U9 age group. In his first season in the U18 he scored 24 goals and provided ten assists; his free kick decided the Junior FA Cup final against United in May with a 2‑1 win. Coach Enzo Maresca praised him: "He is young, full of energy and strong. He can finish himself or set up teammates."

The nomination by the German Football Association suggests that he could play in the DFB shirt in the future, although his future is not yet definitively decided. Experts emphasize that his performances so far, both at club level and in international youth teams, are promising.

Thus Floyd Samba stands at the intersection of two football cultures: after a successful youth spell in England, he could now take on a significant role for the German national team, provided he chooses the DFB.
