Flick says Lamine Yamal’s injury leaves his availability in doubt ahead of Germany’s next match

Germany coach Hansi Flick confirmed that teenage winger Lamine Yamal suffered a knock in training and will miss the rest of the session, leaving his fitness for tomorrow’s game uncertain. “Lamine Yamal took a knock and was in pain. It was better for him to train separately. After training he said everything was fine. He will travel with us and tomorrow we’ll see,” Flick told reporters.

The coach also addressed the condition of striker Gabriel Jesus, who remains a doubt despite showing signs of improvement. “He’s still not at 100%, but I see him enjoying himself with the ball. He can play a few minutes,” Flick explained, suggesting the Brazilian may feature for limited periods if needed.

Flick used the press conference to reflect on the squad’s progress compared with last year’s group. “I can see how well we press, the work we’re doing, the rondos, the possession drills. We’ll see at the end of the season whether this squad is better than last year’s, but in terms of quality it’s top,” he said, highlighting the team’s tactical development.

With goalkeeper Marc‑André ter Stegen and defender Ronald Araújo unavailable, the German dressing room elected two captains, a decision Flick endorsed. “With Ter Stegen and Araújo not being available, it’s normal that they voted for him. I chose two because of their importance in the dressing room. I’m happy with the team’s choice and with the five overall,” he added, stressing the need for vocal leaders on the pitch.

Flick also praised defender Jules Koundé, noting his professionalism and versatility. “What I can say about him is that he is an incredible professional. He gives everything. He is competitive. I spoke with him about the option of playing at centre‑back, which he prefers,” the coach said, confirming that positional decisions will remain fluid based on match requirements.

Overall, Flick’s comments suggest a cautious approach to player fitness while maintaining confidence in the squad’s depth and quality as Germany prepares for its upcoming fixture.
