Fiorentina's centenary crossroads: Antognoni's number 10 retired for 2026/27
Fiorentina is gearing up for two contrasting milestones: the city‑wide festivities marking the Club’s 100th Anniversario on 29 August in Firenze, and the unprecedented decision to retire Giancarlo Antognoni’s iconic number 10 shirt for the 2026/27 season, as announced by President Giuseppe B. Commisso, who will travel with his mother Catherine to share the moment.
President Giuseppe B. Commisso shared a message via the club’s channels, announcing his forthcoming arrival in Firenze for the 100th Anniversario celebrations scheduled for 29 August.
He said he will travel with his mother Catherine, describing their hearts as “full of emotion” and expressing a “great sense of responsibility” for the centenary year, while recalling the memory of his father Rocco B. Commisso during the event.
Commisso outlined that many initiatives will honor Fiorentina’s history and that the 29 August event will be “more than a celebration – it will be a collective embrace” uniting the city, the team and generations of supporters. It will be Un momento of shared pride.
He emphasized that a hundred years of La Fiorentina represent not only football but also passion, belonging, pride, sacrifice, victories, tears, hopes and love, and that the violet colours have entered the hearts of families across Firenze and beyond.
The president highlighted Giancarlo Antognoni as “the most iconic player ever to wear the number 10 of Fiorentina,” praising his talent, elegance, loyalty and his status as a World Cup champion who gave the Club immeasurable value beyond appearances, goals or trophies.
In a special tribute, Commisso announced that the number 10 shirt will be retired exclusively for the 2026/27 season, placing Antognoni’s legacy at the centre of the centenary celebrations.
The evening of 29 August will therefore be dedicated both to the Club’s storied past and to its future, with “many emotional and spectacular moments” planned to honour the history of the Viola.
Concluding, Commisso said the night will help the Club understand who it wants to be – “a united and proud Fiorentina, capable of honoring its identity every day” – and expressed his eagerness to embrace the Viola family in Firenze.
