Fiorentina's €8m Valdepenas deal underlines Real Madrid's cash‑in
Real Madrid have sold 50 % of 19‑year‑old defender Victor Valdepenas to Serie A club Fiorentina for €8 million, granting the Italian side half of the player’s registration while the Spanish giants retain the remaining share. The transaction provides Fiorentina with immediate defensive reinforcement and supplies Real Madrid with cash while preserving a future financial interest.
Fiorentina turned to Real Madrid’s academy to fill a defensive gap, signing Valdepenas after a season of strong performances. The Serie A club purchased 50 % of the defender’s rights for €8 million.
Valdepenas impressed with his role in the Juvenil A side that captured the UEFA Youth League last season and earned a first‑team debut with Real Madrid last year, suggesting readiness for Serie A competition. He entered the academy in 2018 after being spotted by former defender Alvaro Arbeloa and was later promoted to Castilla by club legend Raul.
The sale underscores the Merengue’s ongoing strategy of monetising home‑grown talent. Real Madrid also saw the exits of David Alaba and Dani Carvajal after their contracts expired, terminated Dani Ceballos’s contract by mutual consent, and earlier sold 50 % of Fran Garcia’s rights to Real Betis for €4 million, while transfers of Gonzalo Garcia and Cesar Palacios to Fulham pushed academy‑trained sales close to €200 million this summer.
By retaining the remaining 50 % of Valdepenas’s rights, Real Madrid hope the defender will develop further and command a higher fee in the future. The club views the €8 million upfront payment as a foundation for long‑term profit.
For Fiorentina, the €8 million investment aligns with their ambition to strengthen defensive options while banking on the player’s continued growth. The acquisition positions the Serie A side to benefit from a defender with Real Madrid pedigree as he adapts to top‑flight football.
