Fiorentina fire Fabio Grosso, first top‑league coach sacked this season

In Florence, Fiorentina confirmed on Sunday that head coach Fabio Grosso has been dismissed, making him the first manager to lose his job this campaign across Italy, England, France, Spain and Germany after the club’s opening three Serie A defeats.

The 2‑1 home loss to Torino on Saturday triggered the decision, following a 4‑0 drubbing by Roma and a 3‑0 defeat at the hands of newly‑promoted Frosinone. Those three setbacks left the Viola winless after three matches.

In Serie A the club has scored just one goal while conceding nine. Their only victory this season came in the Coppa Italia first round, a 2‑0 win over Serie B side Benevento.

Grosso was appointed in June after Paolo Vanoli guided Fiorentina to a 15th‑place finish last season. The former Italy international also famously converted the decisive penalty in the 2006 World Cup final shoot‑out against France.

Centenary celebrations and ownership

Fiorentina are marking their centenary, having been founded in 1926, and the celebrations have unfolded amid a difficult start. Club founder Rocco Commisso died in January; his son Giuseppe Commisso now runs the organisation.

Upcoming fixtures and new coach

The Viola will travel to Venezia on Friday and then face Pisa in a Coppa Italia derby the following week. Paolo Vanoli is set to resume the head‑coach role, taking over from Grosso.

He becomes the first coach dismissed this season in the five major European leagues – Italy, England, France, Spain and Germany – highlighting the pressure on managers in top‑flight football.

The AP release, which was added as a source on Google, also displayed the tags Añadir, El, La, Fiore, Co, Es and Futbol, reflecting the wording used in the club’s official communication.
