Financial problems force Getafe to scrap Carvajal deal

In a Wednesday morning press conference, Getafe president Angel Torres explained that the planned signing of former Real Madrid captain Dani Carvajal had definitively fallen through because the club’s Financial‑Fair‑Play limit had already been exceeded. He told a journalist from the TV show El Chiringuito that there was “nothing” and “everything has collapsed”.

Financial hurdles prevent deal

After 13 years with the Royalists, Carvajal’s contract was not renewed in the summer. Getafe had high hopes of signing the experienced right‑back, but now the Spanish top‑flight club’s dream appears to have burst.

According to the Spanish sports newspaper, the Financial‑Fair‑Play issue has caused Getafe to already breach its wage cap. LaLiga therefore cannot approve any further signing.

Torres emphasized that there are currently no updates and nothing can be announced as long as no agreement is reached. Nevertheless, he assured that the club continues to work on a solution.

Carvajal missed most of the playing time last season due to injuries. In addition, he had to compete for the right‑back position with Trent Alexander‑Arnold, who arrived free of charge from Liverpool.

Because of his age, the officials at Real Madrid decided to let Carvajal leave in the summer and sign Denzel Dumfries from Inter Milan as a notable replacement.

Carvajal made 451 competitive appearances for Real, scored 14 goals and provided 66 assists. With the club he won the Champions League six times, the league title four times and the cup twice.

Despite the collapsed transfer, Carvajal remains one of the most successful players in the history of the Spanish record club.
