Financial breach fuels speculation over Haaland’s Barcelona move

Manchester City striker Erling Haaland may seek a move after an independent commission ruled the club guilty of every charge linked to breaches of the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules. The statement described the club’s accounts as a “sham” on five separate occasions.

The ruling throws the future of the Citizens into doubt, with Erling Haaland identified as the most high‑profile player likely to consider an exit. Football Insider called it “inconceivable” that the Norwegian superstar would remain at the Etihad Stadium should the club be forcibly relegated from the Premier League.

Since arriving from Borussia Dortmund in 2022, Haaland has netted 117 goals in 137 fixtures for the Sky Blues and has already collected two league titles. His striking record has made him a central figure in any discussion about the club’s next steps.

Barcelona’s long‑standing pursuit

Spanish outlet reported that Barça opened talks with Haaland in April 2021, aiming to replace Robert Lewandowski, and engaged the late agent Mino Raiola. The report added that Haaland was “very excited” to join the club and that in March 2022 Xavi Hernández travelled to Munich to meet him, after which the Norwegian said “yes” to Barça for the following season, meaning a 2023 arrival.

Sport later insisted that Haaland would prioritise a move to Barcelona, which would pit the 26‑year‑old against Kylian Mbappé in future El Clasico encounters. President Joan Laporta has openly expressed his desire to sign the striker, and suggests Barcelona now sit at the front of the queue alongside Paris Saint‑Germain and Bayern Munich.

Transfermarkt values the Norwegian at €220 million, underscoring the financial magnitude of any potential deal. Over the summer, Barcelona declined to meet a large fee for Haaland’s former teammate Julian Álvarez, preferring to develop Raphinha as a No.9, a stance that has not changed.
