Feyenoord cashes in as Hwang signs for FC Porto

Feyenoord announced today that 29‑year‑old midfielder Hwang will continue his career at FC Porto, with the Portuguese champions paying an estimated five million euros for a three‑year contract that includes an option for a fourth season. The deal, revealed in a joint statement by the clubs of Francesco Farioli and Feyenoord, marks a significant transfer for the Rotterdam side.

Hwang will replace Seko Fofana at Porto, a player who was loaned from Stade Rennes during the second half of the previous campaign. The Portuguese club’s management, led by coach Francesco Farioli, pushed for the South Korean talent, describing him as a valuable addition to their midfield.

Feyenoord had been open to Hwang’s departure after a spell at De Kuip riddled with frequent injuries. The Rotterdammers, possessing a deep midfield pool, decided to part ways with the playmaker, allowing the club to recoup a respectable sum.

Negotiations between the two clubs were described as “intensely” conducted, culminating in the final agreement. With the move, Hwang adds a new country and a new club to his résumé, having previously played in South Korea, Canada, Russia, Greece, Serbia and the Netherlands.

Earlier in mid‑2024, Feyenoord transferred seven million euros to Red Star Belgrade (Rode Ster Belgrado) to secure Hwang’s services. The midfielder grew into a valued asset but missed many matches because of ongoing injury problems.

The 76‑time international will leave Feyenoord with two years remaining on his contract, delivering a “nice transfer sum” to the Dutch side. His departure underscores the club’s strategy of capitalising on surplus midfield talent while refreshing the squad.
