Ferdinand warns United not to be bullied by 15‑year‑old Gabriel
JJ Gabriel, the 15‑year‑old forward, has formally asked Manchester United to allow him to leave Old Trafford, his representatives confirming the request earlier this month. Pictures: Getty capture the young striker as the club confronts a rare teenage transfer demand.
Gabriel joined Manchester United’s academy four years ago and quickly rose through the ranks, earning a place in the U18 side at just fourteen. His early performances marked him as one of the club’s most highly‑rated youngsters.
Last season he trained with the United first team and took part in the pre‑season camp under Michael Carrick. Those sessions gave him exposure to senior‑level routines and further highlighted his potential.
Ferdinand backs Gabriel’s potential
Six‑time Premier League winner Rio Ferdinand has long admired Gabriel’s talent, describing his ceiling as ‘crazy’ on his YouTube channel. “First and foremost, what a talent this kid is… I don’t know where his ceiling is,” Ferdinand said, adding that he has watched the youngster train with Bruno Fernandes, the PFA Player of the Year.
European giants Barcelona and Real Madrid have already held talks with Gabriel’s representatives, while Paris Saint‑Germain and Bayern Munich are also reported to be interested in securing his signature. Our Year Sport newsletter highlighted the growing interest from abroad.
United must not be bullied
Ferdinand warned that Manchester United cannot be seen to be bullied by a 15‑year‑old, insisting the club must remain strong regardless of the outcome. He argued that yielding to such pressure could set a precedent for other academy players.
United currently sit twelfth in the Premier League after winning only two of their first seven games in all competitions. Their next fixture after the international break is a home clash against fellow strugglers Tottenham, who are still searching for their first win.
If Gabriel departs, United risk losing a highly‑rated prospect while the player could accelerate his development at a top European side. Conversely, retaining him would require the club to manage his ambitions without appearing weak.
