Fenerbahce's €50 million pursuit of Rafael Leao stalls after Milan talks
Fenerbahce are in advanced talks to sign Portugal winger Rafael Leao from AC Milan, but the deal hinges on the Turkish club securing a Champions League place. Milan have set a permanent €50 million fee plus bonuses, while Leao insists on at least €10 million a season in wages. The negotiations therefore rest on whether Fenerbahce can qualify for Europe’s premier competition.
The Turkish delegation arrived in Milan yesterday, led by Cihan Kamer, the head of the negotiating team. After a day of discussions they departed again this afternoon, having outlined the conditions under which a Leao deal could be reached. Their presence underscores the urgency Fenerbahce feel to close the gap before the summer window closes.
Milan have ruled out any loan arrangement with an obligation to buy, insisting on a straight permanent transfer. The club’s €50 million price tag includes a bonus clause that could increase the total outlay. This firm stance leaves Fenerbahce with a single financial pathway to acquire the winger.
Leao himself is demanding a minimum salary of €10 million per season, with additional performance‑related add‑ons. His wage expectations match the market rate for a player of his calibre and add a further layer to the financial puzzle facing the Turkish side.
Fenerbahce’s chance of securing the winger depends heavily on their Champions League qualification, as they face a preliminary round tie against Gornik Zabrze in Poland tomorrow. Success in that fixture would unlock the revenue needed to meet Milan’s demands and Leao’s salary.
Galatasaray enjoy an edge in the race for Leao because they have already qualified for the Champions League as Turkish champions. Besiktas remain in contention, and according to the report only Turkish Super Lig clubs appear ready to make a concrete offer for the Portugal international. This intra‑league competition adds pressure on Fenerbahce to act swiftly.
Leao appeared dejected during AC Milan’s Serie A match against Parma on 22 February 2026, a visual reminder of his uncertain future. His demeanor has been cited as evidence of his desire for a new challenge abroad.
No fresh developments are expected soon, meaning the negotiations could extend throughout the summer. Until Fenerbahce either clinches Champions League football or reaches a new financial arrangement, the €50 million chase for Rafael Leao remains in limbo.
