Fearless Madjo finally shines as Villa break eight‑month wait
In the buzzing Red Bull Arena of Salzburg on Wednesday, 17‑year‑old Brian Madjo finally stepped onto the pitch for Aston Villa after a 212‑day registration limbo, delivering a striking debut that justified the club’s long fight for his eligibility.
Long registration battle
Villa’s attempt to register the 6ft 4in forward from Metz, who arrived in January for £10 million, was blocked by FIFA until the Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled in their favour earlier this month. The club argued that, although Madjo had represented Luxembourg in friendlies, his London birth qualified him for an exemption under EU youth transfer rules.
The CAS decision, secured just eight days before the Uefa Super Cup, allowed Madjo to travel with the squad, even though he was omitted from the original travelling list. His inclusion came as Villa prepared for the match against Paris St‑Germain, the back‑to‑back Champions League winners.
Impact against PSG
Unai Emery handed the youngster a chance alongside seasoned forwards Ollie Watkins and Tammy Abraham, who were rested after World Cup duties. Madjo responded by volleying John McGinn’s cross past Brazilian centre‑back Marquinhos, equalising the score after Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s opener for PSG.

Before the goal, Madjo forced a free‑header from three yards and repeatedly troubled the defence, showcasing the physical presence that earned him the nickname “Fearless”. His performance earned praise from Emery, who highlighted the striker’s work rate, tactical discipline and defensive contribution.
Former Villa striker Dion Dublin noted on BBC Radio 5 Live that Madjo’s composure at 17 was impressive, saying the youngster seemed comfortable handling pressure and repeatedly sought scoring positions.
Madjo, an England Under‑17 international with four goals in nine appearances, has already attracted attention as a potential future No 9 for the senior side, especially as England looks beyond Harry Kane.
With the Premier League season opener looming against Brighton on 23 August, Villa now have a new option in attack, adding to their pursuit of other forwards such as Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson.
