FC Porto banks on Chris Smalling's experience to strengthen its defence

In the corridors of the Dragão stadium, supporters are already imagining the silhouette of Chris Smalling, released since the end of his contract at Al‑Fahya in Saudi Arabia, ready to set foot on Portuguese turf. Portuguese media A Bola reports that the 36‑year‑old defender is about to sign with FC Porto, offering the former Manchester United stalwart a new adventure.

A career marked by consistency

Smalling spent a decade on the side of Old Trafford, where he cemented his reputation as a solid centre‑back. After his departure from England in 2019 for a loan to Rome, he extended his stay in Serie A for four seasons before moving to Saudi Arabia.

An open door to the Portuguese league

The player hasn't played since 21 May, making Porto a prestigious destination after a long period of inactivity. The Portuguese club's officials thus wish to enrich an already experienced back‑line, already composed of the Polish duo Jakub Kiwior‑Jan Bednarek.

The age gamble

At 36, the question arises whether Smalling's “brooms” will slow his impact on the pitch. Porto, which seems to appreciate centre‑backs from the Premier League, hopes his experience will compensate for any loss of pace.

If the deal materialises, FC Porto will add a veteran with multiple titles to its squad, while Smalling will discover a new league and the passion of Portuguese football.
