FC Metz appoint former player Grégory Proment after sacking Luc Holtz

FC Metz have dismissed Luc Holtz on Monday and, within minutes, named former player Grégory Proment as the new head coach. Holtz, whose contract ran until 2028, had overseen a side sitting fifth in Ligue 2, six points behind leaders AS Saint‑Étienne as the international break approached.

Holtz took charge of Les Grenats after their relegation to Ligue 2 last summer, tasked with securing promotion back to Ligue 1. His contract was due to run until 2028.

His predecessor, Tavenot, endured a torrid stint, failing to win any of his 16 games after replacing Stéphane Le Mignan in January. The 16‑game run without a victory marked a low point for the club.

At the time of Holtz’s dismissal, Metz were fifth in Ligue 2 as the international break approached. They trailed league leaders AS Saint‑Étienne by six points.

Proment's ties to Metz

Proment, a former France youth international, spent much of his playing career with Les Grénats and has previously described managing the side as a “dream”. He sees the appointment as a lifelong ambition.

His most recent managerial role was at Clermont Foot. He left in the summer of 2026 after just one season in charge.
