FC Bayern Frauen close on Frauen-Bundesliga lead after Köln encounter

While VfL Wolfsburg had dominated the opening four matchdays of the Frauen-Bundesliga, FC Bayern Frauen turned the tables on Saturday afternoon, edging past Köln and extending their unbeaten run. Jovana Damnjanović opened the scoring in the third minute, setting the tone for a decisive performance.

Bayern overtake Wolfsburg

The Team, coached by José Barcala, secured a 5‑2 victory (3‑1 at half‑time) to claim the league’s top spot after the fifth round. This move displaced the earlier leaders, VfL Wolfsburg, who had sat first after the first four fixtures. Bayern’s win marked their fifth successive league triumph, a feat no other side has achieved this season.

Köln’s recent setbacks

Before facing Bayern, Köln had suffered a 1‑2 defeat at the hands of TSG Hoffenheim, their first league loss of the campaign. In the Bayern match, Carolin Elsen pulled Köln level just after the break, but the hosts quickly re‑asserted control. Beke Sterner’s strike in the 56th minute brought the visitors within a goal before Alara’s penalty and Sarah Zadrazil’s finish sealed the win.

Damnjanović’s early goal was followed by a double from Edna Imade in the eighth and 14th minutes, establishing a clear advantage. Köln’s late‑stage efforts could not overturn the deficit, despite a brief surge that saw them draw level at 45+2 minutes.

Since October 2024, the Munich side have remained unbeaten in the Bundesliga, extending a record streak to 47 matches without loss. Two weeks earlier they set a new benchmark with a 4‑1 triumph over Freiburg, marking their 45th unbeaten league game in a row.

The flawless start now fuels optimism ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League tie at the Sportpark Unterhaching against English champions Manchester City. Bayern remain the only German club to have qualified for the competition, as Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt fell in the playoffs.

This contrast between Bayern’s soaring momentum and Köln’s recent struggles underscores the shifting balance of power in German women’s football, with the league leaders poised to test their mettle on Europe’s biggest stage.
