Family priorities prompt Eriksen’s early exit from Wolfsburg

While VfL Wolfsburg chase a return to the Bundesliga, Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen has chosen family over football, ending his spell with the German side by mutual consent. The 34‑year‑old, who has not played since his June 7 collapse, will leave the club immediately.

Contract and early termination

Eriksen signed a two‑year contract when he joined Wolfsburg in the summer of 2025. The deal was set to run until the summer of 2027, but both parties agreed to terminate it early. The midfielder said he wanted to return to Denmark to be nearer to his family.

Health scares and medical history

The Danish international collapsed in the 65th minute of a friendly against Ukraine on June 7, clutching his chest as the match at Odense Isstadion was abandoned. His implantable cardioverter‑defibrillator delivered a shock, yet he remained conscious enough to walk to the ambulance. The episode echoed the cardiac arrest he suffered during Euro 2020 against Finland, after which the ICD was fitted.

Season contributions and future status

Eriksen, who previously played for Brentford and Manchester United in the Premier League, arrived in Wolfsburg as a free agent in September 2025. In his first German season he made 34 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals and providing ten assists, including 31 Bundesliga matches. The midfielder now leaves as a free agent.

Speaking after the agreement, Eriksen said, “At the moment, it is important for me to be close to my family in Denmark. I’m pleased that we were able to find a solution together.” He added, “I know that the club is now in good hands as it aims to make its way back to the Bundesliga, and I am convinced that a successful future lies ahead for VfL.”

Wolfsburg sporting director Dieter Hecking said the club respected Eriksen’s decision and wanted to give him freedom to choose his future. “For us, it was clear that the decision about his future had to be Christian’s,” he explained. He praised Eriksen’s extraordinary career and thanked him for the lasting impression he left on teammates, staff and fans.
